DCU Thesis requirement – Postgraduate

As per ACADEMIC REGULATIONS FOR POSTGRADUATE DEGREES BY RESEARCH AND THESIS (click link to see full DCU binding regulations) which published and approved by Academic Council on 11th June 2014

Thesis Hardbound requirements are as below:

All DCU postgraduate thesis shall be bound within boards of sufficient rigidity to support the work when it is standing upon a shelf. The colour of the boards shall be University blue.

Have the following information on the front (board) cover:

  • the title of the thesis in at least 24pt (8 mm) type;
  • the initials and name of the candidate;
  • the award for which the thesis is submitted e.g. MA, MBS, LLM, MSc, MEng, MPhil, EdD, DPsych, DBA, DMusPerf, PhD; and
  • the year of submission, i.e. the calendar year in which the Faculty Awards

The subject area must not be stated; the reference should be to, for example, ‘PhD’, not ‘PhD in xxxx’.

The same information (excluding the title of the thesis) shall be printed in the same order in at least 24 pt (8 mm) type along the spine of the cover in such a way as to be easily legible when the thesis is lying flat with its front cover uppermost. All lettering on the cover and the spine shall be gold in colour and clear of any graphic design.

TCD Postgraduate thesis regulations

Hi there,

If you are a postgraduate research student at Trinity, it’s better to check out the general thesis  binding specification provided by your university, and refer details to your supervisor.

Below are some abstracts from the university website, hope it will help 🙂

3.4.7 Confirmation/Transfer Dissertation

The transfer dissertation must be submitted before the deadline which will be publicised well in advance.  Three copies, spiral bound, must be submitted to the Postgraduate Administrator by the due date (one each for the DTLPG, Internal Examiner and Supervisor).  

The transfer dissertations must be prepared according to the following guidelines:

  1. Language: the dissertation must be written in good scientific English.  
  2. Length:  the dissertation must not be longer than 30 pages (including pictures and references but excluding appendices). This is a strict limit.
  3. Font and Spacing:  the dissertation should be in New Times Roman 12pt with 1.5 line spacing or equivalent.  Dissertations written in unreasonably small characters will be returned to the candidates without evaluation.
  4. Style:  the dissertation must contain  
  • Title
  • Abstract (max. 1 page)
  • Keywords
  • Introduction and overview of the literature (max 10 pages)
  • Methods and Results (max 15 pages)
  • Forward Plan (include Gaant chart or equivalent) (5 page max)
  • References
  • List of Publications and Presentations

5. References must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the main text and must have the following format:  Authors, Title, Journal, Number, Page, Year

Copies of the thesis are initially submitted with a soft cover. Final copies of the thesis are submitted with a hard cover, with inscriptions on the cover and spine as specified below.

The hard cover is required to be dark blue in colour and the front cover must be gold-embossed in Times New Roman with the following inscription:

  • The full title of the thesis (in 20 point type) together with any subtitles;
  • The name of the candidate;
  • The award for which the thesis is submitted (PgDip (Res), MPhil, PhD);
  • The full denomination of Dublin Institute of Technology;
  • The year of submission;
  • The volume number and the total number of volumes, if more than one.

The spine of the hard-bound cover thesis is also required to be gold-embossed, in a smaller type if necessary, with the following

  • The name of the candidate;
  • The award (in abbreviated form) for which the thesis is submitted (PgDip (Res), MPhil, PhD);
  • The year of submission;
  • The volume number, if more than one.
